Online clarinet lessons, Belgrade, Serbia, all world

The pandemic has shown us that there are many things we can do online and so can music classes. If you have basic knowledge of playing clarinets – we are here to help you or your child in the next steps.

Clarinet playing technique

The clarinet is a wooden wind instrument with a single-reed tongue. Today, the B, Es, A, and Bass clarinets are most commonly used. It is a transposing instrument and is noted in the violin key.

It is made in the form of a cylindrical tube that consists of several parts.

Clarinet parts:

The mouthpiece has the shape of a beak, which is rounded on one side and flat on the other. On the flat side, there is an opening, over which a reed tab is placed.

In the upper part, there are three openings that close with fingertips and eleven openings that close with a system of flaps.

At the bottom, there are three openings that close with your fingers and eight holes with flaps.

There are eight simple valves on the clarinet and all the others are combined.

So, there is a large number of holes on the pipe, one part of which is covered with fingertips, and the others with covers (so-called flaps) which are driven by a complex system of levers.

The mechanism of the modern clarinet is very sophisticated, as is the performing technique so that it is one of the most virtuoso instruments in terms of the ease with which extremely fast and complex tonal movements can be performed.

What is the range of the clarinet? What tones can a clarinet produce?

The clarinet is a wind instrument with the largest tonal range, and the tone itself is rich and expressive, suitable for very different musical characters.

A special feature of the clarinet is the wide range of volume – from almost barely audible sound to very penetrating, especially in high tones. The deepest register, the so-called shallow, is very special for its dark and dramatic sound.

Given all this, the clarinet is the most versatile among wind instruments, so

  • it is often assigned prominent roles in the orchestra,
  • solo literature is quite rich,
  • finds a place in chamber ensembles,
  • is the leading melodic instrument in wind orchestras,
  • and has a particularly important role in jazz.

The origin of the clarinet

The farthest origin of the clarinet goes back to instruments with a reed tongue – in ancient Greece (aulos), and even earlier, in Egypt and elsewhere.

The modern clarinet developed at the end of the 17th century. Already in the 18th century (for example, with Mozart), it was widely used, and it entered the classical orchestral ensemble. It was technically perfected during the 19th century when it was gladly used by romantic composers.
